Ayurveda treatment for hoarseness

Swarabheda, as hoarseness of voice is called in Ayurveda, is a complaint which accompanies or result from Laryngitis( the inflammation of the larynx). It may be caused by certain infections or take, alternately, of hot and cold substances, any abnormal growth and infections produced by chronic tuberculosis. In addition to difficulty in articulation, the patient suffers from a coated tongue, pain in swallowing and, sometimes, fever and burning sensation in the throat.

Khadiradi Vati or Eladi Vati should be sucked as a lozenge. Powder of Vasti Madhu and Vacha should be given in one teaspoonful doses thrice a day with honey. Saline gargles with the decoction of the bark of the acacia tree are recommended as a palliative. Chilies and other condiments should be avoided, as also sour things and heavy, fatty foods. The inflammation of the throat including pharynx and larynx cause hoarseness of voice.

Infection, intake of exceedingly hot and cold drinks, an abnormal growth, foreign material, infection of langs by tuberculosis are some of the main factors responsible for the causation of this ailment.

The patient may not be able to speak easily or there might be pain during the speech. It might be associated with fever and cough. The tongue remains usually coated, and the condition is aggravated when the patient is constipated.

The patient should be given the powder of yashtimadhu and vacha in a dose of one teaspoonful, four times a day mixed with honey. Dry hot fomentation externally is very useful in this condition. Gargle by adding a teaspoonful of Irimedadi taila in a cup of lukewarm water is very useful in this condition. Khadiradi vati or Eladi vati should be kept in the mouth and chewed slowly. If there is constipation, the patient should be given the powder of haritaki in a dose of one teaspoonful ar bedtime with hot water.

The patient should not expose throat to cold wind and should not have cold water. He should avoid taking a head bath for a few days.

Ginger, black pepper, garlic, salt, dry grapes, nd ghee are useful in this condition.
The patient should avoid curd, other sour things,fried things and exceedingly cold things.
